Every week, nearly 300,000 science and math questions are posted, downloaded, answered, and graded on the UT Homework Service web site. During the fall 2000 semester, for example, the program was used by more than 3,000 University of Texas students and 10,000 students at 250 high schools and colleges across the country.

Utilizing this free service, teachers can assign problems, grade the assignments online, and keep records of student progress. Because the system gives students immediate feedback and lets them resubmit their answers, working out difficulties online, there is more time for one-on-one interaction between students and teachers in the classroom.

The UT Homework Service is the brainchild of University of Texas professors C. Fred Moore and Herbert Ward, who devised the program to meet the challenges of grading and record-keeping in large introductory science and math courses. The service now provides an easily accessible web program that is assisting schools nationwide.
