The Harlan J. Smith Telescope, named for McDonald Observatory's longtime director, towers four stories over the dome's floor. Constructed in 1968, the telescope was once employed to aim a laser beam at mirrors left on the surface of the moon by U.S. astronauts, thus measuring the changing distance between the earth and its moon.
