Santa Rita # 1, the oil well that produced the first gusher for the Permanent University Fund in 1923, was shipped to Austin in January 1949 but was not placed on the southeast corner of the University campus until 1958. After producing oil for 67 years, the well in Reagan County, West Texas, was capped in May 1990.
